Understand My Approach

It is not just a dog - its an amazing, intelligent, sensitive being with a full range of emotions and facial expression. A dog can teach you how to be a better human being - but they must first have the opportunity to be seen as they truly are, not as they are assumed to be. I work with the psychology of humans and dogs to create a foundation of true understanding.

"In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi-human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog." -- Edward Hoagland

Dogs rely on instinct and intuition and they use all of their senses to communicate. A dog will do exactly what his/her human is asking it to do. Problems arise when a human is not trained to communicate effectively, cannot read their dog properly, and does not understand how intelligent and sensitive a dog is. The dog is not 'bad' it is simply following its humans lead.

I train people to be better communicators, I teach people how to understand and properly direct their dog, I coach and mentor the dog.

Where did I learn? From the best source of coarse - I learned from dogs how to adopt and deploy the methods that are used by canines to teach and communicate with each other. Too many humans rely on man-made tools and conceits rather than leveraging the natural beauty and clarity of a dog’s way.

I go to your home to work in your environment - your home, your yard, your sidewalks, your dog park, your visitors, your family...to teach you and your dog how to enjoy daily life together. If I take you out of your environment I lose the greatest opportunity of all - the opportunity to observe daily life as it really is and improve it for you and your dog. Unwanted behaviours never exist in isolation, they are made up of many little behaviours which feed each other and collectively contribute to undesirable behaviour...to fix an issue you must address all facets that feed the issue (i.e.aggressive-reactive behaviour).

I do not use dominance-force training; I do not do reward-based treat training. Treats have their place when working with a dog, however treats should be used only when truly appropriate. Everything I do for a dog is positive - a positive which has its origins in the depth of a dog's intelligence. I do not use silly methods like spraying a dog with water (or other substances), throwing chain bags on the floor, walking in circles, placing little piles of food all over the floor, giving a dog vocal praise or treats for each and everything they do. Dog's are amazing communicators - they know when you are proud of them. Dog's do not give each other treats nor reward each other for every 'normal' thing that they do. What happens when a human gives a child a treat for each and every normal thing the child does - the child gains weight, believes it is normal to get something in exchange for everything, the child becomes mal-adjusted and will not understand how to behave in a normal manner...and so it is for dogs as well. I teach my clients and their dogs how to navigate through situations rather than avoid. When we avoid we never learn how to deal with a situation and by so doing we create insecurity. Insecurity is the primary cause of aggressive, anxious and obsessive behaviour. Contributing factors such as poor diet, exposure to toxins (i.e. in dog food) can further exacerbate the behaviour. The root cause of insecurity is lack of access to truly directive, properly communicated, fair coaching and mentoring. Not the dogs fault - instead the source of the problem is human error. The key is to navigate through each situation by staying connected and maintaining a grounded presence with your dog. In so doing you direct and keep behaviour within a healthy range of mental and physical activity - control with cues and reminders, good timing to prevent escalation to over-threshold behaviour. A well adjusted dog does not use physically invasive harmful tactics to obtain what it wants from another dog - instead it uses subtle and self-restrained communication to direct and obtain. In respect, understanding, honor and great admiration of the wise ways of a dog - I choose to use the methods of a well adjusted dog to teach people and their dogs. I look at behaviour from a holistic perspective...insight into the human's habits, the personality of the human and the dog, the dog's diet and health - every piece of the puzzle is important and must be addressed to achieve a well balanced, healthy outcome - that is my method of training, this is what defines me as what I am - a Dog Whisperer.

Dogs are sensitive, intelligent beings that thrive on the comfort of good communication and understanding, they do not thrive on or require domination. Well behaved, happy dogs have well trained owners! I teach you to communicate effectively with your dog, to understand and read your dog's body language, to understand and meet your dog's individual requirements. It is NOT about being an alpha dog (a much misused terminology), it IS about providing true leadership, it is about understanding the intelligence of a dog.
